Talk Africa: Return of the Taliban
The dramatic return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan has sent geopolitical shock waves felt in many parts; including on the African continent.
Images coming out of Kabul since mid-August continue to confirm the Taliban’s hold. The U.S. is rushing to beat a fast-approaching deadline on its 20-year military presence as countries across the world now reckon with the likelihood of a Taliban-led government.
So how are events currently unfolding on the refugees and humanitarian front? Is the U.S.’ sudden and chaotic exit an indictment to foreign military intervention? And are there lessons to be drawn from this experience by African countries?

CORRECTION
Our statement at 1:50 - 2:00, “The U.S. forces began their campaign against the Taliban in October 2011 and in August 2021, they’ve fully withdrawn." has a wording error. Rather, the statement should be “The U.S. forces began their campaign against the Taliban in October 2001 and in August 2021, they’ve fully withdrawn."
Explanation of error: The accurate year for when U.S. forces commenced their military campaign in Afghanistan is 2001, instead it is said; 2011. This was a typo on the anchor's script leading to wrong wording. The duration of U.S. forces in Afghanistan is consequently elaborated in the full extent of the show.
