Physically-based rendering (PBR) textures have made a major impact in the 3D industry, particularly in game engines. While these textures could work with V-Ray using some tweaks in the past, the new Metalness Parameter makes V-Ray Next compatible with PBR workflows, so you can drag and drop metalness and roughness maps into the shader and build realistic materials.
Applications like Substance Painter and Substance Designer (powerful texturing tools) natively export the PBR textures set. You can also find a number of premade examples created by their communities.
