Ridiculous Pass by Messi (Inter Miami) and Analysis
My college coach used to say, "You can tell how good a player is by 2 things: how many touches do they need to make a play and how good do they make their teammates look."
In other words, if you can make your teammates look good with minimal touches you are a great player.
This doesn't just apply to soccer, it's most team sports.
The simplicity of this is what makes him a genius.
If he plays this pass in the air, he demands his teammate have a perfect first touch.
To early or too firm and the keeper cuts it out.
Too late or too soft and the pass gets cut out by the centerback or right back.
Any more hesitation and it's too risky to play and most likely has to turn and play backwards.
If you want to truly understand the game, watch clips like this but don't watch the guy with the ball; watch everyone off the ball - the gaps between defenders, the spacing between lines, the timing and speed of runs. Rewind and watch the 5-10 seconds before every big play.
The biggest problem with US soccer, in my opinion, is 99% of people watch but don't learn. They don't know what to pay attention to. Watching the ball tells you a fraction of what's going to happen. 95% of what you should pay attention to is off the ball.
If you can train yourself to watch the game without staring at the ball you will get a free PHD in understanding the game.
