The Elements of Optimism | Dan Putt | TEDxDetroit

In the 1800s, the economist Thomas Malthus predicted that the growing population would outstrip the food supply. Why didn’t this happen? This story is told through the lens of three elements, whose history is one of moving from scarcity to abundance.
Dan Putt is a licensed professional chemical engineer. He works as a forecasting engineer for Marathon Petroleum, where his day-to-day includes running a 6,000-variable model to calculate optimal refinery operation. When off, he enjoys reading and fixing up the Southwest Detroit home he owns with his wife. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
