Why I’m Choosing GDScript Over Kotlin
As a mobile engineer, my everyday work revolves entirely around Kotlin. I build apps, create features, and solve complex coding problems using Kotlin—it’s a powerful, efficient language, and there are even game engines and plugins built specifically to make games with Kotlin. So, with all these advantages, why would I decide to learn GDScript instead?
In this video, I share my personal reasons for choosing to stick with Godot’s native scripting language, GDScript, even though I have extensive experience with Kotlin. It’s not because Kotlin lacks capabilities; in fact, Kotlin offers fantastic tools and plugins within Godot itself. Instead, my decision stems from a desire to challenge myself, grow my skills, and step outside of my comfort zone.
When you use a language daily, it’s easy to become too comfortable. And comfort, although reassuring, doesn’t always encourage personal growth or creativity. By choosing GDScript, I’m intentionally placing myself in unfamiliar territory. This decision pushes my brain to think differently, forces me to adapt to new programming paradigms, and ultimately allows me to expand my skill set beyond what Kotlin offers me professionally. 💡
Growth as an engineer—or in any profession—is heavily tied to how often you’re willing to face new challenges. Learning GDScript isn’t just about picking up a new language; it’s about learning new ways of solving problems, breaking old habits, and building resilience. These benefits extend far beyond coding. They make you more adaptable, more creative, and, importantly, more confident as you navigate your professional journey.
Whether you’re an experienced programmer, a beginner coder, or someone interested in the idea of personal and professional growth, you’ll relate to this video. It’s about understanding when to embrace what’s unfamiliar, and why stepping away from what you already know can ultimately lead you to become better at your craft.
Join me in this video as I explore the personal motivations behind my choice, discuss the advantages of taking on new challenges, and share insights that might inspire you to take your own steps outside your comfort zone. Let’s talk openly about the value of continual learning and why, sometimes, choosing the harder path can provide greater rewards. 🚀
