With a rental car we drove from Rio De Janeiro to discover the mountainous area in the state of Minas Gerais to visit some colonial towns overthere and drive through the natural beauty of the surrounding hillsides. The Brazilian Goldrush took place here at the end of the 8th century. With the exhaustion of the gold mines in the 19th century, the city’s influence declined but many churches, bridges and fountains remain as a testimony to its past prosperity and the exceptional talent of the Baroque sculptor Aleijadinho.

We spend 1 night in Tiradentes in the charming pousada Arraial Velho. Then we spend 2 nights in Ouro Preto in the beautiful and majestic hotel Solar Do Rosario. The 4th night in the area we spend in Congonhas.
