1974 Iron Bowl, #7 Auburn vs #2 Alabama (Highlights)

The 9-1, #7 Auburn Tigers faced the 10-0, #2 Alabama Crimson Tide at Legion Field in Birmingham, AL. While this was a de facto SEC championship game, the game is perhaps best remembered for a controversy surrounding a play in the third quarter. Trailing 7-17, Auburn receiver Thom Gossom appeared to score on a 41 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Phil Gargas. The touchdown was brought back, however, due to an illegal touching penalty. Auburn fans maintained either that Gossom had not stepped out of bounds at all or that the illegal touching rule (which, at the time, said that a receiver could not touch the ball after going out of bounds, even if he was forced out) was unfair. Likely as a direct result of "The Gossom Incident," an NCAA rule change in 1978 established that a receiver was not guilty of illegal touching if he had been forced out of bounds. This incident was also a major factor in Auburn's desire to end the Iron Bowl's neutral site format.
