¡Qué maravilla de película! ¡Qué relato tan extraordinario! ¡Qué acercamiento tan singular, qué admiración, qué curiosidad y qué ironía hacia lo que nos cuenta! La mayoría de los documentales se proponen reproducir la realidad, pero Herzog, como el mejor de los cineastas de no ficción, entiende que un documental debe transformar la realidad para presentarla al espectador de un modo que nunca antes había imaginado. El protagonista es aquí el suizo Walter Steiner, campeón del mundo de salto de esquí. Herzog emplea cámaras de alta velocidad que ralentizan la acción a una vigésima parte de la velocidad normal. Pero esta no es una película de deportes, sino más bien una película sobre el aislamiento, sobre los límites y las obsesiones del ser humano. Herzog ve y filma a Steiner saltar 179 metros (diez más del anterior record mundial y diez menos de lo que hubiera sido una muerte segura), pero sobre todo ve a un artista solitario y visionario (un tallador de madera) y a un curioso fenómeno de la Humanidad que debe ser explorado. La pregunta que nos lanzan las imágenes es si el hombre se aparta de la sociedad debido a sus pasiones o si escoge sus pasiones para aislarse del resto de los humanos. Allí, en el aire, flotando, con los pies muy lejos de la tierra firme, el rostro de Steiner es el del horror o el del éxtasis. Una mera película de deportes se transforma en una experiencia mística. What a wonderful film! What an amazing story! What a unique approach, what admiration, what curiosity, and what an ironic take on the story he's telling us! Most documentaries set out to represent reality, but Herzog, as the best of all non-fiction filmmakers, understands that a documentary must transform reality and present it to viewers in a way they had never before imagined. The protagonist here is Walter Steiner, Swiss ski jumping world champion. Herzog uses high-speed cameras that slow down the action to one-twentieth of its normal speed. But this isn't a sports film; it is rather a film about isolation, about human limitations and obsessions. Herzog watches and films Steiner jumping 179 meters (ten more than the previous world record, and ten short of what could have been a certain death), but what Herzog really sees a lonely visionary artist (a woodcarver) and a curious Human phenomenon that simply must be explored. The film's images beg the question of whether this man turns away from society because of his passions, or has instead chosen his passions as a way of isolating himself from the rest of humanity. There, floating in the air, with his feet far off the solid ground, the look on Steiner's could be one of horror or ecstasy. A mere sports film becomes a mystical experience. (Carlos Reviriego)
