China's relationship with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was upgraded to a "strategic partnership for peace and prosperity" in 2003. ASEAN countries have signed up for the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by China, substantially ramping up the region's socioeconomic development. Both dialogue and strategic partnerships have spawned multiple mechanisms that have brought China and ASEAN ever closer. What is the "ASEAN way," and what does it say about the organization? Why have China-ASEAN relations been underappreciated and underrepresented until now? In this edition of The Hub in Jakarta, Indonesia, Wang Guan talks to Dino Patti Djalal, founder and chairman of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia, to discuss the future of China-ASEAN relations. Djalal explains that the relationship between China and ASEAN is primarily based on "goodwill, non-interference and mutual respect" and that both sides have nurtured the spirit of pragmatism and dialogue over the years. He says the 4Ds, "depth, dense, durable, dearly," will be instrumental in charting the course for future cooperation, dialogue and exchange between the two sides. Click on the video for more.
