How Cells Know Exactly When to Split — The Timing Is Terrifying #Shorts

300 billion cell divisions happen in your lifetime — scientists just cracked how they know when to start.

The timing system is invisible, molecular, and has to be flawless. MIT researchers mapped the trigger. Each cell builds a protein scaffold called a spindle — two poles that pull chromosomes apart. The spindle only forms when a protein called CDK1 hits peak concentration. That peak is timed by a cascading chemical clock that counts down from the moment DNA finishes copying. But here's the part that breaks every safety net. If CDK1 spikes even 90 seconds early, the spindle grabs chromosomes before they're ready — the cell divides with broken DNA. That's how most cancers start.
