Using Instability to Find Purpose | Justin Ryan, Ph.D. | TEDxSDSU
Leveraging 3D printing and extended reality technologies (such as virtual reality) can allow us to explore the traditionally unseen anatomical world while also giving us a new key to distributed manufacturing. How can we best utilize this technology when the world seems to be in a constant state of uncertainty? Justin Ryan – Research Scientist of the Helen and Will Webster Foundation 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego – believes embracing instability is the key to innovation especially when faced with the unknown. Justin Ryan, Ph.D., is an artist — a very specialized, highly technical, life-improving artist. Dr. Ryan is a research scientist at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and the director of the 3D Innovations (3DI) Lab there. The 3DI Lab creates patient-specific anatomical models for surgical and procedural planning in addition to conducting research regarding anatomical/morphological variation. Dr. Ryan has been an active member of RSNA’s 3D Printing Special Interest Group and has been active in the development ACR’s 3D Printing Registry. He is also a co-chair of DICOM WG-17 which focuses on aligning medical imaging standards with the needs of the 3D community. Dr. Ryan received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Arizona State University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
