Boyle Abbey Ireland: The Monasteries Architectural Mystery

Step inside the quiet ruins of Boyle Abbey in County Roscommon.

Back in 1161, Cistercian monks built this sanctuary as a place of total peace. It took nearly sixty years of hard labor to finish, surviving local raids before the doors finally opened. The peace didn’t last. In 1592, Elizabethan forces violently seized the abbey, turning these sacred walls into a military barracks. It even faced a brutal siege during the Cromwellian wars in 1645.My favorite detail is the beautiful quirk left by the ancient builders.

One side of the arches is round Romanesque, while the other side is sharply pointed Gothic. Because the build took so many decades, the architectural fashion completely changed mid-construction! Don't miss the magical Whispering Arch at the end, where a soft whisper travels perfectly through the stone.
