Inside the Roman Killing Machine: Crassus’ Legion

In the mid-1st century BC, in 53 BC, a single Roman legion consisted of nearly 4,800 men, organized into cohorts and centuries led by hardened centurions. Armed with the gladius, pilum, and the famous rectangular scutum shield, these disciplined soldiers formed the backbone of Rome’s military machine. Crassus would lead seven such legions into the deserts of Persia.
