Part 10: Cleaning the Mosquito Magnet Patriot Plus

Using the Mosquito Magnet Patriot Plus: The unit has been running for about 21 days now, and you can see some of the results- more bugs in the basket! And almost all of them mosquitoes. There are a few gnats, hardly any though.

The cleaning process is simple: Shut the unit down, blow some compressed gas through the port, replace capture basket, propane and attractant, and restart the unit. The instructions state about 5 minutes to clear the flashing LED on the power switch. I gave up after it got dark (2 hours maybe?) and left it on overnight, checked it in the morning and it was solid and catching bugs!

You can inspect the basket without removal, but mosquitoes are so small. And its dark in there. So I take it out and hold it up against the white fence. This can result in some getting away due to: the lever action door on the basket may not seal tightly, or any floating around the chamber before entering the basket may escape.

Amazon reviews were all over the place. I decided to call the company ask why. A few points they mentioned as to why people complained about their products:

1. Don't use pre-filled or cylinder exchange propane. Exchanges may not purge the tank, which can cause air at the top. This in turn causes the unit to not detecting propane and go into a fault code condition.

2. Use their specific CO2 cartridges for cleaning the propane line. Others may not work as well according to their information.

3. Use their attractant. By not using any, or using the wrong type of attractant won't bring in the skeeters close enough for the device to work. Its like a vacuum that sucks them up and in, and they need to be fairly close to the trumpet to get pulled in.

4. Follow instructions. Sounds simple but you would be surprised how many people don't do it. I myself sometimes skip to the good parts but they insisted on following the steps precisely for best results.

5. Call with questions. They were very helpful even though I hadn't bought the product yet, and some simple problems can easily be resolved on the phone.

So I bought this unit with my own cold hard cash to try to get back some outdoor time during peak mosquito season. We've tried other remedies: Citronella Candles, Bug Zapper with attractants, , even having the county spray the neighborhood 3 times a week to no help.

This is my non compensated review.
