The Fascinating Journey of Ramesses II: From Pharaoh to Passport Holder

Ramesses II, also known as Ozymandias, stands as one of Egypt's most formidable pharaohs, ruling for an astonishing six decades from around 1279 to 1213 B.C. Initially laid to rest in the Valley of the Kings' tomb KV7, his final resting place faced continuous looting, prompting his mummy to be relocated multiple times for protection.

In 1974, concerns over the deteriorating state of his tomb led to a remarkable decision: archaeologists transported Ramesses II's mummy to Paris for examination. To facilitate his journey, he was even issued an Egyptian passport, listing his occupation as "King (deceased)."

During the examination, experts made intriguing discoveries. Fungus had begun attacking Ramesses's mummy, necessitating intervention to preserve it. Additionally, analysis unveiled a wealth of insights into the pharaoh's life, including battle wounds, old fractures, arthritis, and poor circulation. There were even indications that he may have suffered from a hunched back in his later years due to arthritis.

Ramesses II's mummy holds a place in history beyond his reign. In 1881, it was among the treasures unearthed in a hidden royal cache at Deir el-Bahri, alongside the remains of over 50 other rulers and nobles.
