During his illustrious career, José Carreras repeatedly experienced violent blows of fate in his private life. Others would have given up, he fought his way back to life and onto the stage. A cinematic homage on the occasion of his 75th birthday to a man who has worked for himself, whom his resilience and will have made what he is to the global public: The Lucky Tenor.
José Carreras' private life was not always as glamorous and untroubled as his world career: his family was persecuted by the Franco regime, his mother died of cancer when he was just 18, and in the late 1980s he contracted leukemia. At that time still a certain death sentence. Carreras took up the fight and survived as one of the first patients to receive a bone marrow transplant.
The handling of the tragic moments in his life in particular reveals a lot about the person behind the opera star. He's a tireless fighter, a great communicator, and a ruthless optimist. He demonstrated his energy not least in 1990 when he founded the "Three Tenors" at the side of Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Shortly before it was founded, Carreras was part of the first recording of Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story", in which he was the only Spaniard to play the leading role of the American Tony.
The 30-year commitment to the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation is further proof of the Spaniard's indomitable nature: year after year, he invites the stars to his donation gala in Leipzig. So far, more than 220 million euros have been raised - another impressive life's work.
The tenor gives a moving farewell concert in his second musical home: in the Vienna State Opera. The audience thanks him with several minutes of applause. Thanks and goodbye to The Lucky Tenor.
