Секрет успеха этой модели отчасти кроется в том, что он, в отличие от многих «пятисоток» и «шестисоток», не является копией 400-кубового внутрияпонского
мотоцикла с увеличенной поршневой. GPZ 500 был разработан с нуля, а в качестве двигателя ему достался мотор от GPZ 1000, от которого фактически взяли
и отпилили пару цилиндров.
Однако, в самой Японии GPZ 500 не продавался — там его ниша была занята моделью Kawasaki EX-4, так что байк поставлялся в США и страны Европы.
К слову, под этим именем модель продавалась только в Европе, в США же она была представлена до 93г как Kawasaki EX500 , а после под более звучным и
