For stocks, intrinsic value is typically determined by analyzing various factors such as the company's earnings, assets, cash flow, and growth potential. It is used by investors to assess whether a stock is undervalued, overvalued, or fairly priced.

In options trading, intrinsic value specifically refers to the difference between the current price of the underlying asset and the strike price of the option. For call options, the intrinsic value is the current price of the asset minus the strike price, while for put options, it is the strike price minus the current price of the asset. Options with intrinsic value are said to be "in the money," while those without intrinsic value are "out of the money."
