Hello and welcome to the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel. In this video, we’ll be doing an important comparison that frankly, we should have done already! We’ll be doing a detailed breakdown of how the Casio PX-S1000 compares with the more expensive PX-S3000.

We’ll be pointing out where they’re similar and where they diverge. If you’ve been trying to decide between the two yourself, this video should be helpful.

Piano Overview

Similarities

For everything different between these two instruments, there are some things that are the same, which is probably why they’re so close in weight. One of Casio’s main talking points for both instruments is that they are some of, if not the slimmest, most lightweight digital pianos around.

For starters, the speaker systems are identical between these two instruments - two 8 watt speakers configured the same. They also both offer 192 notes of polyphony and the same core sound processing. They also have the exact same action.

Differences

The differences between these two pianos largely come down to the functionality and sheer sound selection. That said, if you were looking at either of these to primarily use as a piano, the PX-S1000 is a very compelling choice for the price point.

Piano Sound

Interestingly, despite the specs lining up in terms of the sound engine and speakers, after playing the two instruments side-by-side, it’s clear that they don’t sound exactly the same. The PX-S3000 actually sounds fuller, perhaps due to some undisclosed enhanced signal processing or differences in speaker quality.

The interface of the PX-S1000 is an area that’s definitely lacking, as navigating the various sounds has quite a steep learning curve. Luckily, everything can be controlled via Casio’s Chordana Play App, which you can run on a smart device and connect to the instrument through USB (no Bluetooth MIDI.) There are 17 on-board sounds, along with other sound related features like layer and split.

Piano Action

Both of these pianos have the same action, Casio’s Smart Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard. Given the slim cabinets of both pianos, this action has a more compressed, different geometry than what you’ll see on other digital pianos.

This particular action is very usable, and while probably not the best in the price point, is still satisfying overall. The texture on the black keys feels a bit off, but the texture on the white keys is great. It’s on the lighter side, quite similar in weight to Kawai’s Responsive Hammer Compact found in the ES110.

The repetition speed leaves us a bit wanting, but given that the target audience for these pianos isn’t a high-level classical player, this shouldn’t matter.

Piano Features

The two big feature sets that make the PX-S3000 stand out over the PX-S1000 are the rhythm/auto accompaniment feature, as well as the inclusion of a pitch bend wheel and control knobs. The pitch bend wheel and extra control surfaces are absolutely crucial in making the 3000 a viable professional stage option. These features are super easy to use, so definitely check out the features section in the video as Stu gives us a walkthrough.

Both instruments come standard with a basic switch pedal, but a better sustain pedal or floating triple pedal are optional add-on accessories, as well as matching designer stands.

Conclusions

When seeing all of the extra features on the PX-S3000, it’s quite surprising it only costs $200 more. If you’re only focused on playing piano, the PX-S1000 would be totally fine, but if you’re looking for something with extra features for semi-professional or professional applications, the PX-S3000 is a no brainer.
