I often acquire pieces of lumber that are too big to mill, my chainsaw skills being very limited. I have to outsource large jobs to a local sawmill but I want a my own milling capability. In the longer term I would like a bandsaw mill, but these are not cheap!

I placed some self-imposed boundaries on the project:

a) The mill had to be of the vertical type and not horizontal
b) Zero cost - I had to use existing components that I had or could acquire for free.

The project was cheap in that I did not purchase anything specifically for it, although of course I had purchased the components for other purposes some time ago, but it was cheap!
