THE CHALK CIRCLE is the ritual centerpiece of VIY — a blackened doom metal adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's Слot Виtale.

Night One. Locked inside an abandoned church with the coffin of the dead girl, the seminarian Khoma Brut scratches a ring of chalk into the floor, lights a single candle, and begins to read. She rises. She walks the church blind, arms outstretched, groping an inch from where he stands — and she cannot cross the line. The cock crows. He survives.

The track is built as alternation, like camera cuts: inside the circle the mix is dry, close, and airless — a whispered chant over a quiet bass pulse. Outside the circle it opens into vast cavernous doom as she rises and walks. Her walking is a stumbling 5/4 riff, wrong-footed and groping. Eastern modal melody, bowed drone, reeds and frame drums carry the Slavic folk horror beneath the weight.

Свят, свят, свят.

Do not look at her face.
Do not answer her call.
Nothing exists but the circle.

Первая ночь. Запертый в старой церкви с гробом панночки, Хома Брут очерчивает меловой круг, зажигает свечу и начинает читать. Она встаёт. Она идёт по церкви вслепую, вытянув руки, — и не может переступить черту. Кричит петух. Он выжил.

Сухой шёпот внутри круга сменяется огромным пещерным думом снаружи. Восточная модальность, гудящий смычок, жалейки и рамные барабаны — славянский фолк-хоррор под тяжестью.

Не смотри на неё.
Не отвечай ей.
Ничего не существует, кроме круга.
