"1776" (Bickford Theater, 1996)

-In recognition of July 4 and our nation's birthday, I have three different uploads planned for today, beginning with this professionally shot recording of the great musical about our nation's founding "1776" as performed in July 1996 at the Bickford Theater in Morristown, NJ. The Bickford Theater, located in the Morris County Museum, put on a number of quality musicals and plays between 1995 and 2001 under the direction and supervision of Walker Joyce (who plays Ben Franklin in this production) that received critical recognition and praise from the Newark Star-Ledger, including best play in New Jersey honors.

-First performed on Broadway in 1969 when it won the Tony for Best Musical, and subsequently made into a movie in 1972, "1776" is a great, intelligent look at the efforts of John Adams to achieve a successful vote for independence from Great Britain in the face of tremendous odds.

-In the future I will be doing more uploads of additional productions of the Bickford from this era through the courtesy of Walker Joyce who kept these recordings carefully preserved.

NOTE-For some reason, the kind remarks of Will Lampe, who played John Adams in this production are not showing up in the comments section. I am reproducing them here.

"I played John Adams in this production. It was one of the finest shows I've ever had the privilege to work on. Thanks to Walker Joyce for the amazing opportunity. Hard to believe it was 25 years ago."
