Hello. My name is Dr. Ronaye Calvert-Conley and I am the proud owner and founder of Revive Detox in Los Angeles CA.

Please allow me to speak to you about one of the largest contributing factors that are ruining the safety and ethics of our industry.

The epidemic we are facing today is termed "patient brokering". Some of us call it "body brokering" but the reality is it's all the same. I term it "the prostitution of vulnerability".

Treatment centers are offering these cash incentives to clients to offset the horrific cuts to substance abuse and mental health benefits that the treatment industry has endured over the past few years. I am part of the treatment industry and I too have suffered the losses. However, that is no excuse to sacrifice a client’s life or safety to meet our financial bottom line.

With such an epidemic on our hands patients and clients often ask me, who do they report this to, who cares, who's listening, who's investigating? It is my impression that the FBI is glutted with calls of this nature. I'm also aware that congress is doing their part to try and turn things around.

However, it starts with me and it starts with you. Nothing is going to change unless we change it. Each of us knows at least somebody who is either guilty of patient brokering or is a victim of patient brokering themselves. Our silence means that we are complicit in the actions that are being taken.

I invite those of you seeking treatment for yourselves or a loved one to dig deeper, do your research, ask the hard questions. If a treatment center can't tell you how they maintain their census or what type of marketing practices they engage in, how are you supposed to trust your life or the life of a loved one to them?

It continues to be my mission at Revive Detox and the mission of all of our staff to provide ethical and safe treatment to every client who walks through its doors.

Clients at Revive Detox experience many things, a high staff to client ratio, round-the-clock medical care, expert clinical guidance and assistance, but perhaps most importantly they experience a group of individuals who genuinely is invested in each and every one of their lives. After all is that what a treatment center should be, invested? Invested in saving your life more than they are in their bottom line.

It's time to hold this treatment industry responsible for providing ethical and safe care to our clients. This epidemic stops when we say it does. I say it stops now. Won't you join me?
