Hit the Beach! Painting the USMC 'Amtank' - How I Paint Things

The Amphibious Vehicle, Tracked (LVT) was an amphibious landing craft introduced by the US Navy and Marine Corps during the Second World War. Capable of mounting a variety of weapons, it was a fairly effective transport, but an awful tank!

With the inclusion of a turreted 37mm in the LVT(A)1, Marine commanders had a tendency to think of the vehicle more as a fully-fledged tank, a task for which it was wholly unsuited. This small main gun was relatively inaffective for bunker clearing and fire support roles, and the vehicle's thin armour was proof against small arms and little else. Eventually, some LVTs would mount open-topped turrets similar to the M8 Scott and carry a howitzer into combat for close support, and though the crew were more vulnerable to enemy fire as a result, the trade-off in firepower was deemed valuable enough to be worth the risk.

An interesting vehicle with a storied combat history, the LVTs would nonetheless prove immensely useful when Marine doctrine found the best way to employ their unique abilities. In Bolt Action terms they're a massively useful vehicle, both as a transport or a gun tank, though their large size and thin armour makes them an easy target for determined anti-tank fire!
