Can Stress Kill You?
We've all heard the saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff," and "It's all small stuff." That's good advice, because according to some recent medical studies, stress can kill you because prolonged, constant emotional stress can cause negative physical changes in your body.
Chronic anxiety and stress trigger increased levels of cortisol (often called the "stress hormone"). High cortisol levels lower immune function, reduce bone density, and cause changes in blood pressure and cholesterol that contribute to heart disease.
One recent years-long study of almost 1300 men found that highly stressed individuals have the greatest risk of premature death.
Doctors say taking steps to relieve emotional stress, or recover from stressful events, definitely have a positive effect on both your mood and your body.
Adding exercise and meditation to your daily routine have both been shown to make a positive difference. Of course, exercise also helps you maintain a healthy weight and avoid illnesses and conditions that cause even more stress in your life.
Finally, when you feel stressed out, it's important to limit your alcohol intake. A drink or two may be psychologically comforting, but overdoing alcohol can disturb sleep, which in turn is only likely to produce more stress.
