How GOOD was Herb Dean Actually?

Herb Dean is possibly the greatest referee in MMA history. The man who is known for making the right calls in most fights is regarded as the gold standard for MMA refereeing. And he has been credited as the best by many news outlets and UFC president, Dana White. But prior to becoming a UFC ref in 2004, he himself was an MMA fighter. But obviously, that career has been completely overshadowed. So how good was Herb Dean actually?
