The Rise of Empress Cixi | Chinas Forbidden City

Empress Cixi was one of the most powerful women in Chinese History. A simple concubine, Empress Cixi became the mightiest woman at court in the late 19th century, a masterful manipulator of the Forbidden City’s power structures. She was the ruthless “dragon lady” that subjected the last regents of the Dragon Throne to becoming her marionettes.

She came to the Forbidden City as a young concubine called Yehenara in 1850. Initially striving to become the Emperors wife, instead of a simple concubine, Yehenara forges alliances with the palaces servants. Soon she wins the favour of the Chinese emperor and gives birth his successor. As british forces inforce the opening of british ports, over European forces insist to their own share. The emperor is sick and weary of his ritualized days, incapable of dealing with political issues. He relies more and more on his favorite concubine Yehenara to help in carry out the tasks of the government. She guides the emperors decisions and stays at his side when meeting important visitors. When the emperor dies, he declares his six year old son to be his successor. But all important decisions are made by his mother Cixi. Cixi leads China’s destiny for almost fifty years.
