Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in G minor | Julien Salemkour and the Staatskapelle Berlin

The Staatskapelle Berlin performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 40th Symphony under the baton of Julien Salemkour on the occasion of a Mozart Gala at the Berlin State Opera. In 2006, the Staatskapelle celebrated the life's work of the Austrian master composer on the occasion of his 250th birthday under the title "Celebrating Mozart". On this occasion, they also played Mozart's penultimate symphony, which is one of the composer's most popular works today. The 40th Symphony in G minor K. 550 was probably completed in July 1788.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg on January 27, 1756, and was quickly recognized as a child prodigy. He became one of the most important composers of classical music. His work includes some 60 symphonies, 21 operas and numerous piano concertos and other orchestral works. Mozart died in Vienna in 1791.

The Staatskapelle Berlin has a documented history dating back to 1570, making it the orchestra with one of the longest traditions in the world. It has resided in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden since 1742. Julien Salemkour studied conducting at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. The son of German Algerian parents, he was music director and assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera from 2001 to 2015. He stood in for Daniel Barenboim at short notice for the Mozart Gala in 2006.
