Hip External Rotation (Stretching for Yoga Series)

The first episode in my stretching for yoga series looks at the movement of external rotation of the hip. This movement is used in all the lotus and half lotus positions, janushirshasana, baddha konasana, foot behind head and many more. Good range of motion in this direction also helps to protect the knee in these postures. Beginners to yoga should be really careful to try and improve this particular range of movement (ROM) if they notice it is challenged because it is used so often. Westerners that sit in chairs a lot rather than on the floor will often find this movement particularly difficult.
