His first travel to the Pamir Mountains in the 1990’s yielded a batch of historical film photographs and a collection of Pinkish-Red Spinel Gems, blended together in his New Spinel Book.
20 years later, in 2019 Yavorskyy team went to Tajikistan again and documented the oldest family in Kuh-i-Lal. High-end cameras, drones and other advances of civilization allowed us to create this professional piece of cinematography, impossible back then in pre-digital era when Vladyslav Yavorskyy first discovered the treasures of Kuh-i-Lal Spinel Mine and took photos for his Book.
In this film, the main character Mavladot Farkhodov and his family tell us about the Tajik mountains, the Badakhshan people, traditions and culture of the Pamir, and the mining of precious Spinel stones in the legendary Kuh-i-Lal mine, active for a few thousand years until recently.
Mavladot is the oldest and most honored resident of the village who witnessed the extraction of the largest Red Spinel in history in August 1986, hosted young geologist Vlad Yavorskyy on his first Pamir travel, and generously shared his home, time and memories with us twenty years later.
This new film and the new book: SPINEL FROM PAMIR by Vladyslav Yavorskyy is a heartfelt tribute to Mavladot and his Family, whose hearts sparkle even brightly than Pamir Spinel Gems.
New Book is dedicated to the Spinel from Kuh-i-Lal mine in the Pamir mountains, its breathtaking landscapes and the local people back in the 1990s. The Black Prince’s Ruby in the Imperial State Crown of Great Britain, the 398-carat centerpiece in the Russian Imperial Crown, the Timur Ruby and all historical Red Gemstones originate from this single mine. Described by Marco Polo and Al-Beruni since 11th century and even earlier, Kuh-i-Lal was yielding precious Pink and Red Gems For at least two thousand years, until it stopped operating a while ago.
Vlad Yavorskyy:
“One single afternoon in August 1991, I decided: I have to go to Pamir Mountains. And I call my friend and say: “Let’s hitchhike, let’s go to Pamir Mountains!”
This is our absolutely new book, devoted to one single mine: Kuh-i-Lal, Pamir, Badakhshan, Tajikistan. Even Marco Polo visited this mine.
All photographs in this book were taken in the last century, film photography.
And I realize: as of today, there was no one single western gemologist or geologist ever visited this mine inside.
And we were very lucky to take incredible photographs inside of Kuh-i-Lal Spinel Mine.”
“I visited the Kuh-i-Lal mine twice in the 1990’s, and collected most wonderful Tajik Spinels as well as unique photographs of local life taken with my Leica M6 film camera. Of all the deposits of precious stones around the world, Kuh-i-Lal mines is one of the most unreachable, and it has been closed to visitors since the beginning of the century. Among all my fellow gem collectors I am perhaps the only one who was able to go deep inside the tunnels when the mine was still functioning and the Badakhshan Gems were still being extracted from the ground.
In the recent years, the Tajik Red Spinel is gaining its long-deserved recognition, especially with the Bonhams’ Hope Spinel and Christie’s Mughal Jewels. But you don’t see much of the historical records... So I believe it’s high time for my long-cherished new Book: Spinel from Pamir. The Place, the People and the Gemstones which stole my heart.... forever.”
