✩ What Is A Hemorrhoid: 1:52

We all technically have hemorrhoids! You can think of hemorrhoidal tissue as little cushions of blood vessels and connective tissue. They are located both inside the anal canal, and under the skin around the actual anus (a.k.a. around the actual butt hole).

Hemorrhoidal tissue is considered a normal part of human anatomy and likely aids in fecal continence, or your ability to control when you do and don’t poop! It isn’t until this hemorrhoidal tissue becomes irritated, inflamed, and enlarged that someone has symptoms and is said to “have hemorrhoids.”

✩ What Causes Hemorrhoids: 3:47

Remember, everyone has hemorrhoidal tissue. Usually that tissue becomes irritated, inflamed, and enlarged due to applying too much pressure in the lower rectum and anal canal.

This is usually the result of chronic straining related to constipation, diarrhea, and heavy lifting. But pregnancy can increase that pressure, too!

✩ How To Treat Hemorrhoids Naturally At Home: 6:10

Treating an inflamed, irritated hemorrhoid at home is going to take 2-4 weeks of commitment! Here is an outline of the highlights from the video:

→ Pick a protectant barrier ointment (for external hemorrhoids) or suppository (for internal hemorrhoids)
○ To make DIY suppositories out of coconut oil: heat up the oil on the stove or in the microwave so that it becomes a liquid. Pour that liquid into a dish or baking tray. Freeze or refrigerate the oil until it hardens. Use a fork or knife to make suppositories 😊

→ Be diligent about your bowel movement routine:
○ Apply the barrier ointment or use the suppositories before every bowel movement
○ Sit properly on the toilet when you poop: https://youtu.be/5egK-7jrEHM
○ Do not use toilet paper to wipe—try medicated wipes, baby wipes, or cleaning yourself with water. Pat yourself dry, let the hemorrhoid air dry, or use a hair dryer to dry yourself :)
○ If you have a protruding hemorrhoid (as in you can see the irritated tissue), try to soak your naked buttocks in warm water for 10-15 minutes (you can use a Sitz bath or an actual bath—add Epsom salt if you like it) after bowel movements
○ Re-apply your chosen barrier ointment/suppository, and continue with your day

→ If you have a protruding hemorrhoids (as in you can see the irritated tissue), try to soak your naked buttocks in warm water at least 3x/day for 10-15 minutes. You can use a Sitz bath or an actual bath, and you can add Epsom salt if you’d like.

→ Look at your stool consistency—what can you do to make your stool more like a sausage/snake/banana? Think about fiber intake, stool bulking (maybe you’d benefit from psyllium husk or Metamucil), and generally avoiding foods that either make you constipated or give you diarrhea.

→ Make sure you are staying hydrated
○ The equation I use to determine how much to drink is: take your weight, divide it in half, slap ounces on that number, and that should be the amount of fluid you are aiming to intake per day. 2/3rds of that intake should be water.
○ For me—I weigh 140lbs. 140/2 = 70. If I slap ounces on that number, I should aim to take in 70oz of fluid per day (fluid is water, but it is also coffee, tea, soup, fruit, etc.). 2/3rds of 70 is ~40, so I aim to drink around 40oz of water per day, and get my other 30oz from other sources 😊

→ Wear loose-fitting, comfortable cotton underwear

→ Decrease prolonged sitting if you can!

→ Decrease exposure to straining activities, like heavy lifting, and if you can’t—make sure you exhale (instead of holding your breath) when you exert
