AKUMAL, MEXICO (2021) | Things To Do in Akumal For A Day Trip

Akumal, Mexico is a great place to take a day trip from either Playa del Carmen or Tulum. We did a day trip to Akumal and snorkeled with turtles, saw fish, and had great views of Half Moon Bay and Laguna Yal Ku. Akumal was one of our favorite day trips during our time in Playa del Carmen because of its many things to do, chill vibes, and awesome snorkeling opportunities.

To get to Akumal from either Playa Del Carmen or Tulum for a day trip, you have a few options. You can drive your own car, take a taxi, take a tour bus, or take a collectivo. We chose to take a collectivo because it was the cheapest option and allowed us the most flexibility to get a private guide for the snorkeling with the turtles. Taking the collectivo from Playa Del Carmen is easy. You just need to get to Avenida Benito Juarez right underneath the 307 highway. The ride then takes about 35 minutes to get to Akumal from Playa Del Carmen and at the time of this video, costs 35 pesos each.

Once you get to Akumal, the best thing to do is rent snorkeling gear to see the Sea Turtles. We hired an official National Park guide who let us in on some history of the area and took us to the best turtle viewing spots. If you want to see the turtles, then a guide is definitely the best way to go. There are only 200 people allowed to swim in the protected turtle zone each day, so get there early if you can and secure your spot. It’s worth it to swim up close with the beautiful giant sea turtles! You may still be able to see the turtles outside of their protected zone, but it is definitely more rare.

After swimming with the sea turtles, you can walk the road towards Laguna Yal Ku. This walk takes about 45 minutes total, but is very pleasant as you walk through a quiet residential road full of colorful houses. You can also take a break at a public beach halfway through to see the famous Half Moon Bay.

After your walk, you will arrive at Laguna Yal Ku. This is a beautiful estuary where a cenote is leaking fresh water into the ocean. This unique mixture of freshwater and saltwater makes for an array of sea life. Since the lagoon is protected by an outcropping of land, it’s very calm, making it for the perfect quiet snorkeling destination. Just make sure to get to the lagoon in time as it closes at 5pm.

For the final activity of your Akumal day trip, we recommend going to La Buena Vida for dinner. Since you have to walk all the way back to the Akumal town center in order to get your collectivo, you will want to break up your walk with a cold drink and good food. La Buena Vida is about a 20 minute walk from Laguna Yal Kul and has a really cool beach bar vibe. If you’re lucky, you can find a spot in one of the treehouses to enjoy an evening sunset and drinks.
