1- Royal Palm Turkey

The Royal Palm is a strikingly attractive and small-sized turkey variety. The first birds in America to have the Palm color pattern appeared in a mixed flock of Black, Bronze, Narragansett, and Wild turkeys on the farm of Enoch Carson of Lake Worth, Florida in the 1920s. Further selection has been made since then to stabilize the consistency of color and other characteristics. As an anonymous breeder wrote to Feathered World magazine in 1931, “Turkeys of this type of coloration do crop up by chance where different color varieties are crossed.

2- Bourbon Red Turkey

The Bourbon Red Turkey is a rare breed of the heritage turkey and was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1909. Developed in Pennsylvania and taken to Kentucky with the long rifle, this breed later was given the name Bourbon Red from its popularity from Bourbon County, Kentucky.

3- Ocellated Turkey

The male Ocellated Turkey’s body is clad in a mix of highly-iridescent bronze and green feathers; in the sun they are truly spectacular. The hens are a bit less-brilliant in color, but still very attractive. The blue-gray tail feathers are adorned with large, round blue and bronze spots (ocellus). The bright blue head and neck bear red and orange nodules, which are more pronounced in males.
A blue crown, which becomes larger in the breeding season, tops the male's head; red eye rings develop at this time as well. The leg spurs, used when battling other males, are noticeably larger than those of the North American Wild Turkey.

4- Blue Slate Turkey

The blue slate turkey is a rare, heritage turkey; turkeys were first domesticated in Mexico over 2000 years ago, and the blue slate turkey was first mentioned in literature in the 1800s. In 1874 they were recognized as a standard breed by the American Poultry Association. Even though these colorful birds have been around quite awhile, they are considered to be quite rare. In fact, these heritage turkeys are on the watch list of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, meaning they are globally endangered. Named for the striking blue slate color of their plumage , blue slate turkeys are often kept as pets and entered into poultry exhibitions. They are also raised for their meat.

5- Beltsville Turkey

The Beltsville Small White turkey is named after the USDA research center in Beltsville Maryland where it was developed in the late 1930’s. At the time consumers wanted a bird between 8 and 15 pounds that had a larger proportion of breast meat than what had been available.After crossing many breeds an acceptable turkey was developed. The variety was very popular with home cooks, but as refrigerators became larger and the demand for even more white meat became greater, this turkey was gradually replaced with other hybrids such as the Broad Breasted White. The Beltsville Small White is extremely rare today and is considered a critical breed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
