Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya Is More Competitive Than You Think | Luke Thomas

Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya can't stop attacking each other on social media and have promised a fight between them should happen or is inevitable.

Jones, the former light heavyweight champion, has his set of supporters who believe his size and wrestling ability will be too much. Adesanya, the current middleweight champion, has his own supporters who believe his striking and improved wrestling will be enough to defeat Jones.

So, who's right?

The answer is that both of them are, which is to say the fight is a lot more competitive than some might imagine.

It is true that Jones's success in the wrestling department is historically great, but it's not what it once was. That has lead to greater challenges when striking by virtue of time spent on the feet.

In this video, I look at Jones's takedown ability in his first five title fights versus his last five title fights. The math and tape show there is a precipitous decline in his success in terms of both executing takedowns as well as holding opposition down. That has lead to greater difficulties striking and the math demonstrates that as well. For those reasons, it would be wrong to assume Adesanya is terribly overmatched.

To best illustrate this point, I compared his success on these terms from Jones's first 5 title fights to his last 5 title fights. What you'll see is on paper, Jones vs. Adesanya is a very competitive fight.
