Carvajal de Gredos

Carvajal de Gredos es un antiguo bosque vetón en Cabezabellosa, la sierra más al sur de Gredos.

Su singularidad se conforma de grandes ejemplares de Quercus pyrenaica, junto con lagares celtas y otros restos de arquitectura vernácula, acompañados de afloramientos graníticos e impresionantes vistas sobre #valledeljerte y #valledelambroz. Todo el conjunto denota una gran monumentalidad natural en el extremo más al sur del ZEC Sierra de Gredos.

Los antiguos celtas adoraban al roble por constituir una vital fuente de recursos para todos los habitantes del bosque. No es casualidad que en el retablo de la Ermita del Castillo de Cabezabellosa, sobre el castro vetón, se represente a el árbol de Jesé. Es destacable también otro posible sincretismo, el del patrón de la localidad, San Lorenzo, con el dios Lugh y el mito de Perseo.

Carvajal de Gredos is an ancient Vettonian forest in Cabezabellosa, the southernmost mountain range in Gredos.

Its uniqueness lies in its large specimens of Quercus pyrenaica, along with Celtic acornpresses and other remains of vernacular architecture, accompanied by granite outcrops and impressive views of Jerte and Ambroz Valleys. The entire complex represents a great natural monumentality at the southernmost tip of the Sierra de Gredos Special Protected Area (ZEC).

The ancient Celts worshipped the oak as a vital source of food and shelter for all the forest's inhabitants. It is no coincidence that the altarpiece in Ermita del Castillo in Cabezabellosa, above the Vettonian hill fort, depicts the Tree of Jesse. Another possible syncretism is also noteworthy: that of the town's patron saint, Saint Lawrence, with the god Lugh and the myth of Perseus.
