Fix Crowded AI Posters: Control Image Layouts with Simple Prompt Tweaks
In this video, I show how adding simple layout constraints to ChatGPT prompts transforms a cluttered, poorly-composed poster into a clean, professional design. When creating a poster for "Exit Codes in Bash", my first minimal prompt resulted in a crowded image with the title stuck to the top edge. By refining the prompt in a new chat with specific spatial instructions, I achieved an elegant, balanced result.
The Journey:
1.First Prompt (Minimal):
"Create image: Exit Codes in Bash – Master Success & Error Handling"
Result: Technically accurate, but visually crowded and title positioned at the very top.
2.Second Prompt (New Chat + Layout Details):
"Create image: Exit Codes in Bash – Master Success & Error Handling. Wide poster. Make big margin above the title. Make it catchy, not crowded, with nice colors."
Result: ✅ Clean, elegant composition with proper spacing, vibrant colors, and a professional look.
Key Takeaway: AI often defaults to filling available space. Explicitly asking for "big margin" and "not crowded" forces the model to prioritize whitespace and readability, resulting in a much higher-quality visual.
Learn:
✅ Why Layout Constraints Matter:
Prevents Clutter: "Not crowded" tells the AI to simplify the background and focus on key elements.
Improves Readability: "Big margin above title" ensures text isn't cut off or obscured by UI elements in thumbnails.
Enhances Aesthetics: Whitespace makes designs look more professional and less chaotic.
Fresh Start: Using a new chat prevents the AI from being biased by the previous crowded attempt.
✅ Effective Prompt Refinement Strategy:
Start with the core content: [Title] + [Subtitle].
Identify layout issues from the first try (e.g., too busy, bad positioning).
Add spatial instructions: "big margin above title", "center align", "more whitespace".
Add style keywords: "catchy", "nice colors", "elegant", "simple".
Start a new chat to ensure a fresh generation context.
✅ Pro Tips:
Combine layout + style in one sentence: "Wide poster with big top margin, catchy colors, and uncluttered design."
Use negative constraints: "no complex background", "no extra text", "minimalist".
Save successful prompt structures: [Title] + [Format] + [Layout] + [Style].
If the AI still crowds the image, add "focus on central element" or "use negative space".
