My honest opinion on the $112,595 GMC Hummer EV

Well, it’s finally here. The ELECTRIC 2022 GMC Hummer truck. In this video I’m going to share my thoughts on it, talk about some of the spec and tech of the new Hummer and then of course, the fun stuff, analyze the design and also show you my rendering I did back in March and see if it was a hit or miss.

The GMC Hummer is back. But it’s not the gas-guzzling, bare bones, single purpose, ex-military vehicle is was in the H1, this time it’s an all electric luxury offroader with three electric motors putting out an incredible 1000hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, 350 mile range supertruck with a 0-60 time of 3 seconds.

The HUMMER EV will initially be offered in a fully-equipped Edition 1 trim package. This will go on sale for a suggested price of $112,595 which might seem a bit steep. But you have to keep in mind that this is GMs first vehicle to feature the new modular electric vehicle platform and battery, known as Ultium. That in combination with the performance numbers and the capabilities both on and off road, it’s actually starting to make sense.

And keep in mind that this is the top level trim. The Hummer EV will be available in 4 variants. In addition to the Edition 1, there will be a Hummer EV3X, available in fall 2022, with a three-motor setup, 0-60 mph time in three seconds as well and a suggested price of $99,995.

Then we have the EV2X in spring 2023, with Crab Mode, Extract Mode and a price of $89,995.

The cheapest variant will be the Hummer EV2 in spring 2024, with 2 motors instead of 3. This will be priced at $79,995.

The really good news is that all four trim levels are expected to have over 350 miles of range on a full battery. I think in the end that’s more important than whether your Hummer will do 0-60 in 3 or 4 seconds. GM got their priorities right.

In the long run, you’ll also obviously save a lot of money on gas and more so as electricity gets cheaper with expanding networks and infrastructure.

Now, on the inside, the Edition one features a large, 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen in the center console with a 12.3-inch diagonal driver display.

You have 35-inch-OD Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires as standard with the capability to accommodate 37-inch tires should you feel the need to beef things up a little.

I can’t say it’s a beautiful design but a Hummer shouldn’t be. It’s not about beauty, it’s about ruggedness and functionality first.

I almost wish it was even more stripped down. I’m not sure about the beefed up fenders. The reason is the front one suits the design and flows well and that’s because it’s connected to the modern chamfer that starts at the C-pillar and spills into the front fender.

However take a look at the rear fender design. It has no friend in the rest of the body. It’s a design feature that doesn’t flow well with the rest of the lines and it feels like it wants to be an organic design but at the same rugged and Hummer-ish.

To sum it up, I think the graphic designers had a lot more fun working on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV than the industrial and automotive designer. It’s like the management gave complete freedom to go nuts with the graphics, which is always fun and interesting because the closer you look at the details, the more golden nuggets you find.

For the overall design, it’s a Hummer. I think it’s pretty close to what we all expected to see. Now I know it’s not an electric vehicle but if I had to choose one new car to go explore the mountain passes of Colorado in, I’m going for the Ford Bronco.

Not only is it less than half the price of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, it feels like it has more of a soul. And how can you say no to that awesome, spot on retro inspired design.

If the graphic designers had a blast with the Hummer, the Bronco is a celebration of great automotive design.
