American saxophonist and jazz composer Charlie “Bird” Parker was credited with the invention of bebop, an offshoot of big band music. By exploring new possibilities with the genre, Parker expanded jazz from the dance floor to the concert stage. This concert will celebrate his centennial by featuring music for big band, Latin jazz, and strings and demonstrate how Parker elevated jazz in the worldwide arts scene. The group will perform selections from his most popular and groundbreaking album Charlie Parker with Strings, featuring a classical string section in addition to a rhythm section. The last portion of the concert will focus on contemporary arrangements of his tunes, signifying how Parker’s music is still influencing Jazz today.
