Ferrari suffered a double retirement at the second race of 2020 and this means that they are in a very precarious position in the championship standings. While the double retirement due to Charles Leclerc running into Sebastian Vettel didn’t help matters, many feel that they wouldn’t have fared much better even if they had completed the race

After the Styrian GP, Ferrari finds itself 5th in the championship table behind teams like Racing Point and McLaren.

They had brought some aerodynamic upgrades for the second week in Austria but a wet qualifying and just two laps of racing meant that they could not really assess it. Vettel gave his thoughts on this

“It was a bonus to come back to the same track and also it was very similar in terms of conditions on race day. But we will not get that answer I’m afraid. Also for the update we would really like to get some laps to see where the car is, but unfortunately we will not get that”

However, the collision only made a bad situation worse and team principal Mattia Binotto accepts that

“It’s true we took no real part in the race, but we can’t hide behind the collision that eliminated both cars”

He is, however, hopeful for the future

“Difficult moments can bring out the best in people and I’m sure that will be the case now”

Until the middle of last year, Ferrari was the closest rival to Mercedes and their drop in performance has been so drastic that it has elicited sympathy from the very team they were fighting for the championship lead last year. Toto Wolff elaborated on this

“Of course they are badly beaten now. It's an incredible brand with hard-working people. We want a strong Ferrari. We need Ferrari up front in the fight with all the other great teams. Something like today or the last weekend is not good for us and is also not good for Formula 1”
