Toe Grabbing: Climb with Better Foot Intelligence

Coach Charlie Schreiber explains and demonstrates the importance of Toe-Grabbing.

Toe-Grabbing is a way that climbers can exert force and root into a foothold to a higher level of effectiveness. Just like fingers, our toes can curl and flex inside of our shoe to dig behind holds and pull inwards on them towards our body. Similarly, our wrists are synonymous to our ankles, which rotate the foot and utilize the calf muscle to flex downwards onto holds. Once we have rooted our feet into the holds, we can now use our hamstring to pull on the hold and create tension; just like how using biceps in our arms to pull on hand holds!

I program this drill as 1 of the many regular skill practices included in my client’s warm-up. You can also practice this at home, by grabbing an object out to the side and pulling it towards your body.
