Paradise lost after nuclear tests on island of Bikini Atoll | 60 Minutes Australia

These days, Bikini Atoll may look every bit like tropical paradise on the surface, with turquoise waters, luscious lands and an incredible sea life. But this tiny spec in the Pacific is so toxic, it's virtually a ghost town where anything that grows is contaminated by nuclear radiation from post-war blasts.

That's because after World War II, this Marshall Islands atoll was transformed into a nuclear testing site. The United States detonated 23 nuclear bombs over a 12-year period, vaporising three islands. And when the Americans left, turning away and erasing any memory of the paradise in ruins, Bikini Atoll was deemed uninhabitable, displacing its population and leaving them with lifelong health problems.
