Island Tree Poppy at San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden

The Island Tree Poppy (Dendromecon rigida) is a plant that is native to the California coast, specifically Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands, as well as Baja California. The evergreen shrub ranges from 6-18 feet in both height and width, and does well in full sun. It's great for use on slopes, roadsides, backgrounds, as screens, and as color accent. Fire resistant and deer resistant, this plant provides habitat and also tolerates salt spray, heat, and wind. Flowers are 2-3 inches wide and bright yellow, blooming spring to summer with a few leftover flowers throughout the rest of the year. Leaves are deep blue-green, 3-5 inches long. Once established, it does not need to be watered. Must be well-drained; prefers sand soil--best planted in a raised container or on a slope in heavier soil. It does not respond well to sever pruning, so only light shaping is advised after bloom to keep it neat. Hardy to 10 degrees F.
