Everything About ND FILTERS and the 180 DEGREE SHUTTER RULE!
One question I get asked a log is if people should buy ND-filters for video? So let's have a look at it.
ND-filters are used in videography to create motion blur and stick to the 180-degree shutter rule. This rule means that your shutter speed should be twice your framerate, which gives your footage a natural motion blur.
To be able to do that, you can either adjust your aperture to expose your video correctly or you have to use ND-filters if you can't adjust your aperture. As a low aperture makes your video bright, you use the ND-filter to make it darker.
On the DJI Osmo Pocket, for example, you can't adjust your aperture, so you need ND-filters.
The same counts when you want to have a blurry background and for that reason need to use a low aperture.
So a lot of people think they always have to stick to the 180-degree shutter rule to get a cinematic look. But that's not always the case. Let's see when you really need to use this rule:
- If you have moving objects that you want to show in the normal speed
- If the moving object is close to the camera and you want to show it in normal speed
- Pan and tilt movements of your camera
As you see it's always about movement. Especially if something or someone is moving fast and is close to your camera, you want to have some natural motion blur.
But there are exemptions:
When you don’t need to use the 180 Degree rule?
- Sport and action shots
- If you want to slow your slip down
- If there isn’t much movement in your shot
- If the moving object is far away
- If you want to have even more motion blur (like hyper lapses or time lapses), slower shutter speed as your framerate in that case...
Also, the 180-degree shutter rule is not always correct because the framerate doesn’t affect motion blur. Only shutter speed affects motion blur!
So you have to make the motion blur or shutter speed decision based on your export framerate and not about the framerate you record in.
Here are some examples:
1. FPS: 25p | Shutter: 1/50 on a 25p timeline in normal speed - Correct motion blur
2. FPS: 50p | Shutter: 1/100 on a 50p timeline in normal speed - Wrong motion blur. Here is only half of the motion blur you need for a natural as of the 1/100 shutter.
3. FPS: 50p | Shutter 1/100 on a 25p timeline, slowed down to 50% - Correct motion blur. Your subject moves only 50% of its original speed in that case, so 50% of the natural motion blur is correct.
Conclusion:
I know the 180-degree shutter rule and ND-filters is a huge and quite complicated topic but you shouldn’t get crazy about it cuz in a lot of shots it’s actually not that important. Especially when you’re just starting out and you’re on a tight budget, it’s probably better to spend the money on other camera gear, like a gimbal for example.
