Tesla Highland Model 3 Top 10 Facts and Corrections

There has been a lot of misinformation about the new “Highland” Tesla Model 3. Here is what has ACTUALLY changed with the Highland Model 3 vs. the Model 3 that is currently being sold today.

1. Tesla has only announced a Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range Highland Model 3. Currently there is no indication of a Highland Model 3 Performance. They certainly could announce one later but as of right now the Highland Model 3 Performance doesn’t exist even on paper.

2. Tesla has not changed the batteries or motors of any of the Highland Model 3s at all. Anyone saying the batteries have changed for the Highland cars you can order right now is wrong. They may change the batteries or motors in the future but right now the motors and batteries are the same as the current cars being built.

3. The RWD Highland charges at the same max 170 KW DC as the previous car. The LR Highland charges at the same max 250 KW DC as the previous car.

4. New Highland Model 3s add up to 282 km in 15 minutes DC fast charging vs. 275 km in 15 minutes of DC fast charging for previous cars. You are probably wondering how the LR car adds the same range as the RWD car does if the LR charges at a faster max rate. Tesla is grouping all of the cars together here and listing a max range possible for all of the cars. The old specifications listed the same range in 15 minutes of DC charging for the Performance model as the LR and RWD models. This statistic is kind of meaningless because it is a max theoretical value across all trims. Only the LR with 18” wheels could actually achieve this value.

5. The Rear-Wheel Drive Highland Model 3 weight has gone from 1,752 Kgs(3,862 lbs) in the old version to 1,765 Kgs(3,891 lbs). The Rear-Wheel Drive Highland Model 3 is 29 lbs heavier than the current Rear-Wheel Drive Model 3.

6. The Highland Model 3 LR weight has gone from 1,830 Kgs(4,034 lbs) in the old version to 1,828 Kgs(4,030 lbs). The Highland Model 3 LR is 4 lbs lighter than the current Model 3 LR.

7. The range is different depending on what standard is used to measure it against. Right now there are not any EPA range estimates. However, the WLTP(Europe) range for the RWD car has gone from 510 Km with the 18” wheels to 554 Km. That is a 44 Km(8%) difference. With the 19” wheels it has gone from 491 Km to 513 Km. That is a 22 Km(5%) difference.

8. The WLTP(Europe) range for the LR car has gone from 626 Km with the 18” wheels to 678 Km. That is a 52 Km(8%) difference. With the 19” wheels it has gone from 602 Km to 629 Km. That is a 27 Km(5%) difference.

9. Top speed of the new Highland Model 3 LR has changed from 233 Kph(145 mph) to 201 kph(125 MPH) because the new tires are not rated for the 233 kph top speed. It appears that the new top speed applies whether you have the 18” or 19” wheels on the new Model 3 LR. The RWD Model 3 top speed has changed from 225 kph(140 mph) to 201 kph no matter what wheel size you choose. All of the announced Highland Model 3s have the same 201 kph top speed now.

10. The stated 0-100 kph times are unchanged from 6.1 seconds for the previous RWD car and 4.4 seconds for the previous LR car. Wheel size does not change these stated times either.
