Azure Local is Microsoft's distributed infrastructure software that allows you to run virtual machines (VMs), containers, and select Azure services on your own on-premises hardware. Formerly known as Azure Stack HCI, it is designed for hybrid scenarios where you need to keep data on-site while managing everything from the Azure cloud via Azure Arc.
How it works
Azure Local combines key technologies to create a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) in your own datacenter or edge location:
Azure Arc: This is the "bridge" that extends Azure's management capabilities to your local environment. You use the Azure portal, APIs, and CLI to perform lifecycle operations, such as deployment, updates, and monitoring, on your on-premises resources.
Azure Local OS: Your on-premises hardware runs a specialized operating system (formerly known as Azure Stack HCI OS) that includes virtualization and storage capabilities.
Validated Hardware: Microsoft hardware partners provide pre-validated servers optimized for Azure Local.
