Hannibal Lecter’s tale is one that has all the emotions of life, but they are experienced in such extremes, that they become incomprehensible to normal humans like us. His story starts out as that of a young boy, born to wealthy parents in a war-torn country. Although the war ends in 1945, its horrors haunt Lecter forever. He lost his parents to the war at a very tender age, but this was not even the worst part! A group of looting and plundering soldiers find him and his baby sister Mischa. In a ghastly stunt, they not only cook and eat her, but also force-feed him. This savage act of cannibalism takes a toll on his personality. Years later, he transforms into a fine gentleman but with a bleak, murderous side. The nail that was Mischa’s gruesome death was only lifted when Hannibal Lecter exacts his revenge. However, that nail, leaves behind a scar in his mind, a hole that would remain there forever. In this video, we will dive deep into the psychology and actions of Hannibal Lecter and try to shed light on how Thomas Harris wanted us to perceive his fictional serial killer and cannibal, in the books Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal. Furthermore, we will draw a character sketch from Lecter’s cinematic depictions that were based on the books.
