Dr Dan Hiebert - Canadian Migration During and After the Pandemic
A virtual talk delivered October 16, 2020
[ Abstract ]
Dr. Hiebert begins with a brief overview of the challenge represented by Covid to migration systems worldwide, which is captured in the idea that it is a triple crisis (health, economic, humanitarian). He then turns to Canada and begins by noting the very different policy choices made during previous economic crises, in the 1980s and 1990s. How do these inform our current situation? This leads to a consideration of the choices made in 2020 in light of Covid, and an examination of recent data on temporary migration and permanent immigration to Canada. That is, what does Canadian im/migration look like in the context of (mostly) closed borders? Dr. Hiebert ends by offering some tentative comments on where he sees things headed, though stressing the word tentative.
