In an incident of racism caught on camera, this Latinx Savannah Georgia student was told to speak English by a stranger at a McDonald’s.

Man: Ain’t no f*cking way. I worked here. What’d you do? Coming over on a f*cking boat.

Cristina: Oh, I did? I came in on a f*cking boat? At least I can afford an airplane.

Man: Shut up! What you need to do is shut the f*ck up.

Cristina: Yeah, I’m video-ing this.

Man: Do it. Don’t give a f*ck.

Cristina: You’re a racist.

Man: I know I am.

Cristina: You’re a racist.

Man: I know I am.

Cristina: And you shouldn’t be proud of that, you shouldn’t be.

Man: Speak English.

Cristina: I’m speaking with my friends. You f*cking racist.

Cristina Riofrio, a college student, said the man's comments caused her and her friends to cry. A McDonald's employee then asked the man to leave.

The man is an employee of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. After performing an internal investigation, the Sheriff's Office fired the employee.

Sheriff: The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is going to distance itself from people like this. We’re not going to tolerate it. And that’s the end of the subject.

According to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey, nearly 4 in 10 Latinx individuals say they experienced discrimination, including being criticized for speaking Spanish in public.
