Why you should buy an external display for your iPad Air. If you’re planning on getting iPad Air you probably should get an external display.

Even though I’m using a 2018 iPad Pro for this video, everything I’m about to show you works exactly the same on the new iPad Air.

I’ll put a link to all the products mentioned in this video in the description.

That’s because of iPadOS. They work the same no matter what device you’re on.

And now that the Air had USB C you can use it with all kinds of great USB C accessories.

1. Magic Keyboard and mouse + big display = desktop

2. Some apps can extend your workspace. Photos, Procreate, Apple TV, Netflix etc all work perfectly with the external display.

3. iPadOS is getting better all the time. But it still has a long way to go.

4. It charges your iPad while you’re using it.

5. This is probably the future of mobile computing.

But it's not perfect, so what’s missing:
You can’t extend the desktop because there isn’t a desktop on the iPad.

Apple needs to find a way to show more info on the external display instead of just mirroring.

The iPad is a good laptop alternative, but it’s definitely not a Mac replacement yet. It’s still too difficult to do the basics on the iPad and the mouse makes this harder because it’s not a real mouse cursor but a simulation of a touch done via the trackpad or Bluetooth mouse.

Whether you choose the Air or the Pro, USB C makes the iPad a much better computer and if the iPad Air is your first iPad you’re definitely going to enjoy the experience.

If you’re a creative professional with pro workflows you may want to hang on to your MacBook. Well, at least until iPadOS improves which could be any year now.
