STOP & FRISK: UNCONSTITUTIONAL, BUT NEEDED?
After years of complaints and rising grassroot movements, the controversial racial profiling resulting from the New York City Police Department's stop-and-frisk practice was declared unconstitutional--causing an eruption of heated debate and polarization in the US. Statistical data and detailed anecdotes presented in court revealed that the stop and frisk policy indirectly targeted blacks and Hispanics while yielding minimal justified arrests. District Judge Shira Scheindlin deemed the practice as blatantly violating the civil rights of the targeted minorities. She ordered for the first time ever for an independent monitor to oversee the abuse of stop and frisk methods and body cameras on the officers to reduce the instances of complaints and misconduct. Top New York City officials like Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly are in outrage of the judge's decision and saw the judge as being a liberal who is biased against the police departmental policies. They argued that the stop and frisk practice is the main reason that crime has been driven down in New York City to an all time low---considerably low for it's size as a major city in comparison to other urban centers in the nation.
